News

Entrepreneurs inject excitement and diversity into their communities, from the largest metropolis to sparsely-populated towns. The local communities of Eastern Oregon have taken a keen interest in supporting these business leaders, knowing they are critical to advancing their economies. As the power provider to these communities, Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative is dedicated to investing in the programs and people making economic growth a reality. The following examples are just a few of the innovative businesses and programs building a foundation for future growth to drive their communities forward.

Innovative Agriculture

Eastern Oregon is known for its forested mountains interspersed between dry, desert environments. Historically, local economies were based on available natural resources such as timber, mining and agriculture. A new take on that dependence is occurring in Grant County at the John Day Greenhouse, a 6,240 square foot fully-automated facility utilizing hydroponic systems to grow crops such as lettuces, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. The environment inside the greenhouse is fully controlled for temperature, humidity, irrigation and fertilizer usage through the latest automated technology. The greenhouse is more than just a place to grow vegetables. The greenhouse removes restrictions on the local agriculture economy, like dependence on barren and abused soils or short growing seasons. Owned and operated by the City of John Day, the facility is a boost to the local economy, introducing fresh produce into a historically rural food desert and delivering self-reliance. Produce is sold to local grocers, restaurants and directly to consumers, with all proceeds reinvested in the greenhouse or other community development projects that benefit local residents.

Both organizations are supported by Foundry Collective, a nonprofit that helps rural communities create and operate Main Street Entrepreneurial Centers providing resources to innovators and small businesses.
